Get in style with Ghanaian fashion brand Metakay
Metakay founded by Kyere Kwaku Awiti is a Ghanaian luxury Prêt-à-couture fashion brand. Kwaku, an illustrator and textile designer started the brand to bring his designs to life and share his brilliance with the African fashion industry and the world at large.
The brand draws inspiration from the elements in its surroundings and creates luxurious, daring, and bold garments using the smocking design technique as a brand signature. This signature can be seen in garments created by the designer which gives the garment a high-end and elevated look.
The smocking technique makes up the entire garment or can be seen as details in the garment. Kwaku’s inventive designs are influenced by his Ghanaian heritage, passion for movies, internet research, and interpersonal relationships. His creative direction is guided by ideals such as faith, teamwork, creativity, dynamism, and discipline.
The brand has showcased its designs at the Lagos Fashion Week, an event held in Lagos to promote African fashion designers and serve as a networking platform between designers. Metakay was a finalist of the Green Access program which seeks to create awareness about environmental issues and encourage young fashion designers to adopt greener and more sustainable approaches in their work.
Garments from the brand have been worn by the likes of Aisha Ayensu, Claudia Lumor, Nana Akua Addo, Nana Ama McBrown and Becca, to name a few of the women that have graced the brand with their influence.
