The Best Road Trips Outside of Accra

  • February 20, 2026

People often looking for a break from the city of Accra, may still be confined in it, since many vibrant outdoor pursuits are created with only Accra in mind – beach parties, bistro restaurants, run clubs, nightlife, playgrounds and parks etc.

While other regions may have activities and sceneries scattered across a much rural landscape, people often do not make the trip. Ghana has many beautiful places beyond Accra, and a variety of new experiences and activities waiting for you to explore.

Here are a few roadtrip ideas you can try out solo or as a group interested in going beyond Accra during the holidays;

Watch the city lights from Aburi

Driving up the Aburi mountain is definitely the go to roadtrip experience for anyone looking to explore Ghana outside Accra but not so far from it. The ultimate fun trip begins with the smooth ride on the switchback road that leads to the mountain top just to catch the view. Aburi, Mampong, Akropong and other towns on the hill have several lodges you can also try if you want to extend your stay.

ATV Riding

Just outside the city of Accra, people can explore the vast nature of Aburi, Shai hills, Adukrom and other stations with an approved ATV riding group. ATV on dirt roads is a high risk activity, fun and adventurous people can explore. Checkout ATV Aburi and Firefly ATV tours in Shai hills.

Camping in scenic areas

Various parts of Akosombo, Atimpoko, Wli,  Kwahu or ones hosted by resorts and cabin owners – Nubay wild, Akosua village, Kasapa center. These days, Ghanaians are exploring camping in the wilderness as an ultimate getaway experience outside of Accra.

Daytrip to the Enclave, Truba Kumasi

Kumasi often gets left out during travels in the country. While the city is a great royal and cultural hub for visitors and locals, fun side attractions are not explored very much over here until now. Drive up to the city of Kumasi to try out the new adventures the city has to offer – Ziplines,  Kayaking on the lake, Abseiling and many more.

Volta Hiking trails

The Volta part of Ghana boasts of very high mountains, scenic views and waterfalls for dare devils and adventurous people to try out as a roadtrip activity.  Climb up the trail to the Wli waterfall, Mount. Afadjato and Mount. Gemi, Amedzofe and many more.

Up North on Safari

The deserts, the beautiful red clay and vast wildlife is what makes a beautiful roadtrip to the northern part of Ghana. Explore a beautiful culture of the people and a day trip at the Mole National Park, if wildlife and gaming is your thrill.

Waterfront Picnics

When you visit Ghana, Accra is known to have most of the entertaining beaches and waterfront resorts that attract locals and tourists. However, various places across the country have scenic waterfront views and beaches that can host group picnics.
